Congratulations for taking the first step towards the new You.  It is not easy to seek help.  The process of creating positive change can be difficult.  But I see it happen every day.  All it takes is a little determination and the willingness to ask for a little help.

Real, lasting change can only come from within, from an inner source of wisdom and resilience deep inside ourselves.  The fact is, the only person you can change is yourself. 

So where do I come in? I help my clients to:

  •   IDENTIFY their problem,
  •   Feel a sense of CONTROL while exploring their issues,
  •   Actively APPLY a change of perspective, coping skill, or behavioral modification, and
  •   Keep their focus on the NOW.

I call this the I-C-A-N System.

Why is focusing on the NOW so important? A great man once said that “the Past is the ultimate illusion.” All our memories, hurts, childhood traumas, as real and painful as they are, only influence us today because we allow them to do so. Our capacity for growth is greatest when we live in the present moment.  That is where real change happens.

Dr. Jyothsna Bhat, PsyD

My name is Jyothsna (Jyosh) Bhat.  I am a licensed clinical psychologist with a doctorate in clinical counseling psychology.  (You can read more about my professional background and qualifications in the "About Me" tab.) 

I grew up in St. Louis, MO, and went to college at Washington University. I completed a Master’s degree in Psychology at Cleveland State University, and then completed by Doctorate in Clinical Counseling Psychology at Wright State University. I have 12 years’ training in psychotherapy and psychological counseling.

I conduct individual, couples and family therapy for children, adolescents and adults. I also conduct weekly group therapy sessions on Mindfulness and Stress Reduction.

What You Can Expect in Therapy

I conduct my sessions in a very relaxed, calm and positive environment. In the first session, which lasts about 75 minutes, we will get to know each other a bit, understand the issues you want to work with, and establish a treatment plan.  Regular followup sessions last about 55 minutes, and will be on either a weekly or twice-monthly basis, depending on each situation.

I use a number of complementary approaches with my clients, much like attacking a problem from many different angles. My therapy sessions are based in “theoretical orientations” including Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, Strengths/Resilience, Acceptance and Mindfulness, Interpersonal and Systems.

I also give my clients individualized homework to help them keep the focus on change between sessions. My goal is for you to see measurable progress, experience consistent improvement and feel empowered.
